Communication Increases Employee Retention

So Much to do, So Little Time

You are the leader of your company. Your attention can be easily diverted with all of the tasks needed to keep the organization on track, meeting strategic goals, and sometimes managing the day-to-day administrative tasks. But as the leader of the organization, your focus and priority must be communication.

But one of the most important things you can do for your organization is to create a culture of communication. Without open and effective communication, your organization can suffer multiple maladies; inefficiencies, poor customer service, and ultimately, an increase in employee turnover.

Create a Culture of Communication

Creating a culture of communication doesn’t have to be difficult; but it does take work. As the leader of the company, its up to you to set the example. Be willing to engage your employees in conversation and ask them to share their thoughts. One of the most important components of conversation is the art of actively listening. So if you are going to start a conversation and solicit input, be sure to listen attentively to what you are hearing.

Be Available

In order to have conversations you must make yourself available to your employees to have conversations. Show your employees that you are willing to set time aside to talk. Show genuine interest in what they have to say and be open to hearing opinions or feedback. Listening intently and asking questions shows your level of concern for the employee.

Understand the value of the water-cooler conversation. The lunch room is often perceived as a place where gossip is exchanged and rumors are started. However, this informal communication allows employees to get to know each other on a personal level. Allow trust and the open flow of ideas among teams to occur so relationships are formed.

Team Engagement

In order to consider facilitate maximum communication, you will need to consider various types of communication necessary for different teams to work together. Do you need an instant messaging system to help team members share information in fast-paced situations? Allow different departments to share information gathered from customers. Is there a way to share all of that constant information amongst your team with a system customized to your companies’ needs? Provide the right tools that you can provide your employees to foster communication.

In particular, you are responsible to create an environment of open communication, one where goals, ideas, and feedback are freely shared. Build a strong organization through communication. Common goals, a sense of human connectedness, and a opportunity to contribute can enable strong loyalty, engagement, and the tools they need to work together to help your organization achieve its goals.
